If you feel anxiety about going to the dentist, you are not alone. Many people feel some degree of fear or anxiety about getting a dental procedure done. So, in order to help all our patients feel calm and ensure a positive experience, at Northridge Dental Group we offer a full range of sedation options.

Sedation dentistry is used to help patients relax. Pain control is best achieved with anesthetics or similar medications. Sedation can range from strong to quite mild, and is safe for children and adults.

One common form of sedation we use is nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. This gaseous mixture has been used in dentistry for decades, and is a great mild sedative. It is inhaled during treatment and relaxes both mind and body. It can produce a feeling of lightness or giddiness (hence the name), suppress sensitive gag reflexes, and even make time appear to pass quicker. It doesn’t affect a patient’s ability to communicate with our doctors, and effects wear off quickly after gas flow is stopped.

We also use stronger sedatives in both oral and intravenous forms. Oral sedatives are taken before your visit so that you are relaxed by the time you arrive. IV sedation can be quickly effective and carefully controlled during treatment. It will not make you unconscious, but you may fall asleep. Depending on the strength of sedation, you may not be able to drive yourself home.

If you are concerned about anxiety or other special needs preventing you or a loved one from getting needed dental care, sedation dentistry may be just the thing. Please call our Northridge, CA, office to learn more about sedation dentistry or to set an appointment at Northridge Dental Group today.
