A Tooth Suffering from a Missing Onlay Filling Might Need a Dental Crown

Permanent molars and premolars often have deep pits, fissures, and textures in the biting surface of the tooth enamel. This makes these teeth more efficient for the tasks of chewing and grinding. At the same time, these areas can also start to trap bacterial deposits which could foster large cavities.

With early detection and diagnosis Drs. Arami, Ariz, Rezvani, and Separzadeh might be able to treat this type of occlusal cavity with an inlay or a large onlay dental filling. While this is designed to repair the tooth for a long time to come, it is possible for poor oral hygiene practices to shorten a dental filling’s lifespan.

If bacteria invade the seam of the filling, it could cause a new area of tooth decay to form, or cause the dental filling to fall out. In a situation like this, our dentists might advocate a dental crown restoration. This method of treatment will replace the entire tooth enamel layer with a durable, alternative material.

To do this, our dentists will remove any remaining tooth enamel leaving behind the healthy core of the tooth. This abutment will serve as an eventual anchor for the dental crown.

An impression will be made and sent off to a dental lab, where special dental technicians will create your dental crown. In the interim, a temporary crown will be cemented in place to protect the abutment from harm.

We will call you back in for a short second appointment when your new dental crown is ready. Our dentists will remove the temporary crown and cement your new dental crown onto the abutment.
