A dental crown is typically created from durable materials that can replicate the hardness of natural tooth enamel. Yet there are some unfortunate instances when an oral trauma can apply sufficient force to chip or fracture one of your dental crowns.

If you find yourself in a situation like this, you need to seek timely treatment. The longer you wait to seek professional care the more likely you are to experience significant complications. This could increase your chances of needing more invasive treatments down the road or potentially lead to the total loss of the tooth.

While you’re waiting to see your dentist, you will need to resist the temptation to wiggle, or even try to clean the loose crown. Every little bit of movement has the potential to damage to the abutment.

If a blow to the face has left unwanted debris or stray blood in your mouth you can gently rinse it away with lukewarm saltwater. Our dental team will handle any other necessary cleaning measures during the appointment.

If the anchoring abutment within the dental crown hasn’t been damaged we might be able to reseat the dental crown. If the abutment has been damaged, we might need to perform a root canal to restore the abutment’s structural integrity. This special endodontic therapy will restore sufficient structure to anchor a new dental crown.
